New Visa Promotions in Thailand: Attracting Tourists and Expanding Opportunities
The Thai government has recently approved a series of visa promotions aimed at attracting more tourists and enhancing the country’s economy. These measures include visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival schemes, extended stays for students, and reduced health insurance requirements for retirees. Let’s dive into the details:

1. Visa-Free Entry Expansion

Previously, 57 countries were eligible for visa-free entry to Thailand. Now, that number has increased to 93. The additional 36 countries include Albania, Cambodia, China, India, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Romania, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. This expansion aims to make Thailand more accessible to travelers worldwide.

2. Visa-On-Arrival Enhancement

The cabinet has expanded the visa-on-arrival program from 19 countries to 31. This means that visitors from these countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Thai airports. The streamlined process facilitates travel and encourages more tourists to explore the country.

3. Five-Year Visas for Work and Tourism

Digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers now have an exciting opportunity: a five-year visa that allows stays of up to 180 days, with the possibility of extending for another 180 days. Previously, these individuals were limited to two stays of 30 days each. Whether you’re working remotely or exploring Thai culture, the Destination Thailand Visa (cost per the DTV is 10,000 Baht) caters to your needs.

4. Learning and Touring: Muay Thai and Thai Cuisine

The new visa also targets those interested in learning Muay Thai (Thai boxing) and Thai cuisine. Imagine spending five years in Thailand, mastering the art of Muay Thai or becoming a culinary connoisseur while exploring the country’s vibrant culture. It’s a unique opportunity for enthusiasts and learners alike.

5. Extended Stay for Foreign Graduates

Foreign students completing higher education in Thailand can now stay for an additional year after graduation. Instead of leaving immediately after their studies, they have the chance to find work during this extended period. The government hopes to retain talent and fill essential roles in various fields.

Effective Date

All these measures will take effect on Saturday, June 1. So, whether you’re a digital nomad, a student, or someone eager to explore Thailand, these new visa options offer exciting possibilities.

Visitors aged 50 years or more who want long-stay visas are currently required to have health insurance coverage worth 3 million baht. Under the cabinet's resolution on Tuesday, each long-stay visa applicant in this age group is required to have health cover of only 440,000 baht - 400,000 baht for inpatient treatment and 40,000 baht for outpatient cover. This is effective for long-stay applicants from September to December, Mr Chai said.
